Reverend Dr. Howard V. Willis, Jr.
Pastor, Greater Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church
The Reverend Dr. Howard Van Willis, Jr. was reared in Petersburg, VA. He is the third child of Deacon Howard and Deaconess Virginia Willis Sr. He is married to the former Ms. Sabrina D. Thomas of Hampton, VA., and they have one son Howard III and one daughter Vanessa. They currently reside in Waldorf, MD.
Being a champion of education, Dr. Willis completed his undergraduate work at Virginia State University where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. In acknowledgement of his calling to the ministry, he matriculated at the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University where he obtained a Master of Divinity degree. In December 2006, he completed a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Preaching and Leadership from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. The title of his dissertation is The Associate Minister Preaching in The African American Baptist Church.
Dr. Willis has been active in service for the Lord since the age of 16. As a layperson, he has served in comfort and healing ministries, Men’s ministries, street evangelism, usher board, and choirs. He has headed Easter fellowships and alternative fellowships during Halloween for youth that have served over 800 children in each event from toddler to teenager. As a minister he has served as pastor, assistant to the pastor, Sunday school teacher, Bible study leader, chairperson of a stewardship committee to raise 1 million dollars, and currently he serves as pastor of Greater Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church (GMPBC) in Washington, DC.
Since his arrival and installation at Greater Mt. Pisgah in 2007, the church has more than doubled its Sunday’s attendance, a website was launched, deacons and deaconess have been appointed, GMPBC has received its first minister of music, and revitalization and creation of ministries has been dynamic. Under the theme, “Serving Christ in Excellence” Dr. Willis and the Greater MT. Pisgah Family are building disciples of Christ to minister to a disenfranchised and dislocated world. Dr. Willis was licensed to preach the gospel in June of 1999 at the Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church, New Kent County, Virginia, and was ordained at the Faith Missionary Baptist Church, Capitol Heights, Maryland in November of 2001. Above all, Dr. Willis is a man of faith and seeks nothing else, but to serve God in every capacity and holds fast to the scripture,
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Heb. 11:6 KJV)
